What exactly is the attraction in working out on great big machines, in an enclosed space, maybe without windows, while you listen to the grunts and groans of those around you and breathe in lots of different body odours, none of which are very pleasant? Maybe joining a gym and planning a customised workout with a personal trainer might make you feel that you are ticking all the boxes to keep fit, but it really doesn’t need to be that way.

In order to get fit and stay fit, you need to build extra activity into your life. Preferably, this should consist of a mixture of aerobic activity, to get the heart pumping and boost the circulation, and endurance activity, to increase strength and stamina. You don’t need a gym for this, and you can get fit without  the help of a machine.

A number of studies have concluded that people were fitter and healthier around the time of World War II than at any time since. The reasons were to do with wartime conditions. Since both food and petrol were difficult to obtain, people ate less and walked more. Also, there were none of the labour saving devices we rely on today. Women spent each Monday washing the laundry by hand, wringing it out with a heavy mangle and bending and stretching to peg it out to dry.

Lots of people also grew their own vegetables as a diet supplement to the rations. Nobody belonged to a gym, and yet these people were so much fitter than today’s generation, who enjoy all the benefits of nutritional science, high disposable income and technology.

Keeping your joints healthy to cope with the rigors of exercise is also important and there are several factors to consider.  Our Omega 3 Fish Oil Supplement is perfect for enhancing joint health.

If you are looking to build up muscle, then the gym is the place for it. However, if you just wish to tone up your body and boost your circulation, there are other choices open to you. Join in with a team sport such as football, netball or rugby. If you prefer to exercise alone, pay a visit to the local swimming pool. Swimming is one of the best exercises there is, because it works all of the major muscle groups in the body.

Finally, don’t forget the benefits of good old fashioned walking. Spending an hour in the fresh air, enjoying the sights around you and observing Nature at its best is generally more enjoyable than spending that hour in the gym. Today, people are often far too reliant on technology and machines. Fresh air and natural antioxidants can go a long way to helping you to get fit and stay fit.
