Vitamin D is also called sunshine vitamin since it is produced internally in the body when the skin is exposed to sunlight. The very commonly known consequence of Vitamin D deficiency in the body is called Rickets which is a disease affecting the strength of bones and other skeletal deformities, especially in children. Vitamin D has an important role in converting the calcium from our diet to mineralize properly and be used by our skeletal structure. Deficiency of Vitamin D thus leads to softer bones and other problems related to bones.

The recent studies in medical science have revealed that Vitamin D has many important roles in the body besides calcium assimilation for the bones. Deficiency of Vitamin D has been found to be associated to the host of other health problems like cardiovascular diseases, cancer, the cognitive disorder in the elderly, depression, severe asthma in children, infections, etc. Most of the serious research revolving round role of Vitamin D in the human body has been made in about last 15 years, and the results are revealing new dimensions of its importance.

While a blood test for finding out the level of Vitamin D is the best way to know whether one is suffering from Vitamin D deficiency, there are some signs and symptoms which also point if you need to test for its deficiency.

  1. If you have complaints of bone ache, joint pain, quick fatigue, etc., there is a possibility that due to Vitamin D deficiency, the collagen’s at your bones are not adequately replaced by calcium from your diet.
  2. If you are over the age of 50, the production rate of Vitamin D by the skin tends to reduce significantly despite the same quantum of sun exposure.
  3. If you have dark skin, the pigment melanin (skin colouring pigment) acts as a sunscreen and thus reduce the conversion of Vitamin D in comparison to people with fair or paler skin.
  4. If you are obese, then the body fat acts as the sink for Vitamin D. Remember, VitaminĀ  D is fat soluble, and you require more Vitamin D to complement for it.
  5. The feeling of depression in many could be attributed to it. Vitamin D is correlated to the production of the hormone serotonin, the feel-good hormone in the body.
  6. In case you sweat from your head, chances of deficiency are higher. Young children with complaints of head sweating are considered to a sign of early deficiency.
  7. In case you are prone to respiratory infections in winters, lack of adequate amount of Vitamin D could be the reason for the recurring respiratory tract infections.
